Homestead Tax Credit – Pay Attention to the Pink Slip
May 12, 2010 by Courtney Webster
Not all pink slips bear bad news. The pink “Homestead Verification Form” that will be enclosed with your property tax bill is very important and can save you and your clients thousands!
A bill in the legislature has required that these forms be mailed out with the property tax bills in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and they must be completed and returned by every homeowner who wishes to claim a homestead deduction and their property. Property owners have until January 1, 2013 to return the card.
Why? These cards and the legislation requiring them are aimed at cracking down and preventing homestead fraud.

Property Tax Caps In the Hands of Voters
January 26, 2010 by Courtney Webster
| Property Tax Caps In the Hands of Voters | |
| The voters are the only thing standing between taxpayers and permanent property tax protection in the Constitution. As required by law, the much lauded property tax caps have been passed by two separately elected General Assemblies after the Senate affirmatively voted 35-15 last week. The caps were originally passed in 2008. The question of putting the caps in the Constitution will now be up to voters on Nov. 2.
After receiving voter approval, it will be unconstitutional to levy property taxes greater than 1% of a homestead’s assessed value, 2% of farmland or rental property AV, or 3% of a business’ property without specific permission given by the voters via referendum. |
Arts & Design District – Book store closing
January 26, 2010 by Courtney Webster
An independent book shop specializing in mystery and suspense novels is closing after a seven-year run in Carmel. The Mystery Company in the Arts & Design District plans to host a farewell party Jan. 30, and close for good a few days later. The shop, which is owned by husband-and-wife team Jim Huang and Jennie G. Jacobson, will offer $10 off any purchase of $40 or more and $30 off $100 or more. Huang has been selling mystery books for 22 years, in Boston, Kalamazoo and Carmel. The couple is moving to Ohio, where he’ll manage the Kenyon College bookstore. “It’s hard to express how disappointed we are that things didn’t work out at The Mystery Company, and how much we’ll miss the many friends we’ve made here in Indiana,” Huang wrote on his blog. “We’ve given this everything we could and we’ve had a great run. In the end, though, it just wasn’t enough.”
